The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) Andaman & Nicobar Regional Centre successfully organised a three-day training workshop on Coastal and Marine Biodiversity of Island Ecosystem from December 19 to 21, 2024. The event, held at the ZSI Auditorium, was part of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change’s sponsored initiative to train personnel from various services.
The workshop concluded with a valedictory ceremony, attended by notable figures from the field of environmental science and wildlife management. Dr. E.B. Charkurkar, Director of ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, A&N Islands, graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Dr. S. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) at the Department of Environment and Forests, served as the special guest.
In his address, Dr. Charkurkar congratulated the participants for their active involvement in the workshop and emphasized the importance of understanding the intricate relationship between various environmental elements. He described the environment as a complex system where soil, air, water, plants, animals, and microorganisms are interconnected. He stressed that any disruption in one component could have far-reaching effects on the entire ecosystem.
Dr. S. Dinesh Kannan also shared his insights from the workshop, reflecting on the valuable discussions and experiences exchanged during the sessions.
Dr. C. Sivaperuman, Course Director, delivered the welcome address and outlined the key objectives of the training. He also presented a detailed report on the activities and learning outcomes of the three-day workshop, which aimed to enhance the participants’ understanding of the coastal and marine biodiversity in the unique island ecosystem of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
