The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, inaugurated a two-day training program on ‘Scientific Rearing and Management of Goats’ at the Panchayat Community Hall in Rabindra Nagar (28 km), Little Andaman, on Tuesday.

The initiative aims to improve livestock productivity and promote sustainable livelihoods by equipping farmers with modern goat farming techniques.

The training was formally inaugurated by Ms. Sanjeeta, Pradhan of Rabindra Nagar, who addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of adopting scientific rearing methods to overcome common challenges faced by local farmers. The program also witnessed the presence of the Sarpanch and other members of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), whose participation underscored the importance of community-led efforts in advancing animal husbandry practices.

During the technical session, veterinary experts delivered practical training on various aspects of goat rearing, including proper shed construction, balanced nutrition, day-to-day farm operations, and effective disease prevention and control. Participants were also provided with reading materials and plastic basins to aid the practical implementation of the knowledge shared.

The second day of the training, scheduled for August 7, will feature a veterinary camp and distribution of essential medicines to assist farmers in maintaining healthy livestock.

This program is part of the department’s broader efforts to enhance animal husbandry activities across the islands. The enthusiastic participation of farmers and local leaders reflects growing interest in adopting scientific methods to improve farm outcomes. The AH&VS Department has plans to roll out similar programs in other regions, aligning with the A&N Administration’s vision of promoting sustainable rural development and economic empowerment through improved livestock management.
