Training on Scientific Rearing of Teressa Goat and Nicobari Pig Held at Great Nicobar

The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), A&N Administration, in collaboration with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) and Veterinary Hospital, Campbell Bay, organized a two-day training programme on ‘Scientific Rearing of Teressa Goat and Nicobari Pig Management’ at Rajeev Nagar, Nicobari Community Hall, Great Nicobar, on August 25 and 26, 2025.

The programme aimed at enhancing livestock productivity and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for tribal farmers in the Nicobar Islands.

The training was inaugurated by Mr. Barnabas Manju, Chairman, Tribal Council, Great Nicobar, in the presence of Tribal Captains from different parts of Little Nicobar Island. Their participation reflected the community’s commitment to adopting scientific methods of livestock rearing.

Technical sessions were led by Dr. Parag Deori and Dr. Manoj S. Gowda, supported by Veterinary Compounders Ms. Magdaleen, Ms. N.K. Yashmeen Shabnam, and Mr. Hamilton. The experts covered a wide range of topics including the scope of Teressa Goat farming, housing systems, breeding management, care of kids and piglets, feeding practices, record-keeping, disease control, and the economic potential of goat and pig rearing. Practical techniques to improve livestock productivity and ensure sustainability were emphasized during the sessions.

The initiative underlines the AH&VS Department’s commitment to promoting scientific livestock practices and supporting the rural economy of the islands. The enthusiastic participation of tribal farmers highlighted their eagerness to adopt modern methods for improving agricultural and livestock-based livelihoods.

The Department has assured that similar programmes will continue in the future, in line with the A&N Administration’s vision of fostering sustainable development and strengthening livelihood security in tribal communities.
