Recognizing the crucial role of nutritious fodder in the growth of the dairy sector, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services organized a hands-on training session on silage making, a key fodder conservation technique, at the Livestock Farm Complex in Dollygunj.

The training was conducted by Dr. Prakash Bala, Principal Scientist from ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram, and was attended by trainers from the department along with progressive farmers from South Andaman. The session aimed to promote fodder conservation methods to ensure a stable supply of nutritious feed for livestock, especially during seasonal shortages.

During the program, Dr. Bala demonstrated the ensiling method, a process that helps preserve green fodder for long-term use. An interactive session was also held, allowing participants to clarify doubts and gain deeper insights into best practices for fodder preservation.

Welcoming the gathering, Dr. Subash Baburao Palve, Senior Veterinary Officer, emphasized the importance of good animal husbandry practices for livestock welfare. Meanwhile, Dr. Sunita Roy encouraged farmers to adopt silage-making techniques to enhance livestock productivity and ensure year-round fodder availability.

The initiative aligns with the department’s broader efforts to support dairy farmers through improved fodder cultivation and conservation, ultimately contributing to the sustainable growth of the dairy sector in the region.
