Training Program Empowers Rural Women to Take Active Role in Panchayat Development

A Block-Level Training Session titled *‘Strengthening of Institutions of the Poor – Empowering Rural Women to Participate in Panchayat Development’* was held recently at the CMTC Building in Ferrargunj. The session aimed to educate and empower rural women, particularly Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) and Community Resource Persons (CRPs), equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for active participation in Panchayat development.

The program commenced with a warm welcome from Mrs. Lalita Tigga, Block Development Officer (BDO) of Ferrargunj, who greeted the attendees and highlighted the importance of women’s involvement in local governance. Ms. C. Vijaya, a domain expert from the Department of Rural Development (RD), introduced the session by discussing the pivotal role of women’s engagement in Panchayat affairs. Emphasizing the transformative power of women in leadership roles, she noted that the initiative strives to build a more inclusive, participatory, and sustainable grassroots governance model with women at its core.

Ms. Agnes Bartholoma, Sub-Inspector, Police Station Ograbraj, led an informative session on the legal rights and criminal laws protecting women, providing valuable insights into the legal framework that supports them.

The training also featured Ms. Shanti Murugesan, In-Charge of the One Stop Center (OSC) under the Directorate of Social Welfare, who elaborated on OSC’s essential role in assisting women facing violence and abuse. The session underscored the support systems available for women in distress and how OSC can be a vital resource for their safety and well-being.

Adding to the discussions on women’s empowerment, Ms. Mariyam Bibi, Zilla Parishad Member representing Hope Town/Bambooflat, shared insights on the Panchayati Raj System and the critical role women play within it.

The training concluded with a vote of thanks from Mrs. Lalita Tigga, expressing appreciation for the participants and speakers who contributed to this impactful event. This initiative is expected to foster an inclusive environment in local governance, empowering rural women to become active agents of change in their communities.
