The C.D. Block, Prothrapur, under the Directorate of RD, PRIs & ULBs, A&N Administration, successfully organized a training programme on handicraft making using bamboo and waste materials for members of NRLM Self Help Groups (SHGs) at Gram Panchayat Shyam Nagar, Swaraj Dweep.
The training, held from October 13 to 22, 2025, saw the participation of 26 SHG members from Gram Panchayat Shyam Nagar. The initiative was launched in response to requests from local SHG members seeking to develop skills in creating and marketing handicraft products to enhance their livelihood opportunities. Given Swaraj Dweep’s prominence as a popular tourist destination, the programme aimed to tap into the island’s significant potential for the sale of locally made handicrafts.
A valedictory function was organized on October 23, 2025, in the presence of Mrs. Gurjeet Kaur, Block Development Officer, Prothrapur; Mr. Alok Kumar, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Shyam Nagar; and officials from the Block and Panchayat Offices. Participants showcased a range of handicraft items crafted during the training, following which certificates were distributed to all trainees.
Addressing the gathering, the Block Development Officer encouraged SHG members to continue producing innovative handicraft items and to actively participate in the upcoming SARAS Mela at Sri Vijaya Puram. The Pradhan also assured continued support, including providing dedicated spaces at key tourist spots to help SHG members market their products effectively.
