In a significant step towards enhancing public transportation services in Shaheed Dweep, the Transport Department has introduced its first long chassis bus to the island. The move comes in response to complaints of overcrowding on the existing mini buses, particularly during school hours, causing discomfort to students and other commuters.
Flagged off on October 3, 2024, by Mr. Vishwendra, Secretary (Transport), the new bus is expected to alleviate these concerns by increasing capacity and providing a more comfortable ride for passengers. The addition was made possible after requests from Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members and with the approval of the Secretary (Transport). The introduction of the bus marks a milestone in the continuous efforts by the Transport Department to improve public bus services across the region.
During the flag-off ceremony, Mr. Vishwendra emphasized the importance of reliable public transportation, especially for school children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. “This new bus will significantly reduce congestion during peak hours, ensuring safer and more comfortable travel for our students,” he said. He also mentioned that the initiative was part of a larger effort to upgrade public transportation in Shaheed Dweep following the procurement of 21 new buses this year under the guidance of the Chief Secretary.
Highlighting the department’s commitment, the Secretary said, “Our goal is to create a reliable, safe, and efficient transportation system that caters to the needs of all citizens.” The new bus, which is compliant with BS VI emission norms, has been wrapped in images showcasing the beauty of the Union Territory, adding an aesthetic touch to its utility. The vehicle is also expected to benefit tourists visiting the picturesque island.
Mr. Vishwendra also took the opportunity to address grievances and suggestions raised by the PRIs, assuring them that all matters would be resolved in a timely manner. He encouraged students to maintain the bus, which he called an important asset, in its pristine condition.
The Assistant Commissioner of Swaraj Dweep, Mr. Vikram Singh, expressed his gratitude to the Transport Department for the timely allocation of the bus. He commended the department’s operations in Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep, not only for adhering to the bus schedule but also for their prompt response to unforeseen events, ensuring that residents are always supported.
Mr. B. Binoy, Deputy Director of the department, also spoke at the event, underscoring the significance of the occasion for the local community. He noted that since the establishment of the State Transport Service (STS) unit in Shaheed Dweep in 2002, this was the first time a long chassis bus had been allocated to the island, marking an important upgrade from the mini buses previously in service.
Local representatives, including Ms. Champa Das, Pramukh of Prothrapur Panchayat Samiti, Ms. Pinky Das, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Shaheed Dweep, and Mr. Dasarat Verma, Zilla Parishad Member, Shaheed Dweep, praised the Transport Department’s efforts. They also brought up several issues affecting residents of the island, which they hope will be addressed soon.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Mr. Sanjiv Kumar Singh, Assistant Director (Transport), marking the beginning of a new era in public transportation for Shaheed Dweep.
