The Transport Department has reminded the general public and all Government Departments that every motor vehicle, including those owned by the Government, must carry a valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate as mandated under Rule 115(7) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.

The department stated that the PUC Certificate serves as proof that a vehicle’s emissions are within the permissible limits prescribed by law. Holding a valid PUC Certificate is not only a legal requirement but also a crucial step toward reducing vehicular pollution and safeguarding environmental quality.

All vehicle owners — including Government Departments, autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings — have been directed to ensure that their vehicles undergo periodic emission testing at authorized PUC testing centres and that valid certificates are maintained at all times.

The Transport Department further cautioned that driving a vehicle without a valid PUC Certificate constitutes a violation under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and will attract penalties as prescribed.

The department has appealed to all concerned to strictly comply with these requirements to help reduce air pollution and maintain a clean and healthy environment in the Islands, a press release from the Transport Department said.
