Tributes Paid to Heroes of 1857 at Chatham Memorial

Rich tributes were paid to the heroes of the First War of Independence of 1857 at the Chatham Memorial on Tuesday, marking the historic arrival of the first batch of freedom fighters to the Andaman Islands on March 10, 1858.

At a solemn function held at the Chatham Memorial on Chatham Island on the morning of March 10, 2026, the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Ms. Chanchal Yadav, IAS, laid a wreath at the memorial as a mark of respect to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Senior officers of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, along with old inhabitants of the islands, members of the Local Born Association, and members of the general public, also offered floral tributes at the memorial.

The gathering observed a two-minute silence in honour of the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the cause of the nation.
