A two-day training programme on “Value Addition of Agricultural Produce (Flowers)” was organised by the Department of Agriculture, Rangat, in association with UTATMA, under farmer-oriented activities at the Panchayat Hall, Kausalya Nagar, on January 30 and 31.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. George Kujur, Pradhan, Gram Panchayat Kausalya Nagar, who attended the event as the Chief Guest. Addressing the participants, he urged Self-Help Group (SHG) members and women farmers to make optimum use of the training to improve their livelihoods through value-added agricultural practices.

At the outset, Ms. Shirly Thomas, Assistant Director (Agriculture), highlighted the importance and future prospects of value addition in flowers. She encouraged SHG members and women farmers to take up the cultivation of various flowers and ornamental plants, stating that skill development in this sector could open new avenues for income generation.

During the technical session, Ms. Saraswati Sutradhar, Agriculture Assistant, provided detailed insights into the package of practices for cut flowers such as Heliconia, Torch Ginger and Alpinia. The session focused on scientific cultivation methods and best practices to enhance productivity and market value.

The training also included hands-on demonstrations on preparing flat bouquets, round bouquets and garlands. A total of 20 SHG members and women farmers participated in the programme, gaining practical exposure to flower-based value addition techniques.

In addition, a field-level demonstration on post-harvest management of spices, including cinnamon bark extraction (peeling and processing), was conducted on January 30 at the field of Mr. Ajit Mondal in Urmilapur village under Gram Panchayat Urmilapur. As part of the initiative, 118 cinnamon seedlings along with other agricultural inputs were distributed to the beneficiaries.
