Two-Day Women’s Sports Programme Held at Netaji Stadium to Mark International Women’s Day

To commemorate International Women’s Day, the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, A&N Administration, in association with the Directorate of Education and the Sports Authority of India (STC), Sri Vijaya Puram, organized a two-day sports programme for women at Netaji Stadium on March 7 and 8, 2026. The event aimed to promote women’s participation in sports and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle among women across the Islands.

On the opening day, competitions in Volleyball (Open Category) and Badminton (Singles – Open Category) were conducted at Netaji Stadium, witnessing enthusiastic participation from women athletes and sports enthusiasts.

On March 8, a series of athletics and recreational events were organized for women in the age groups of 18–30 years and above 30 years. The competitions included 100 m sprint, 200 m sprint, 400 m sprint, 800 m race, 1200 m walk, 1.6 km cycle race, 50 m back run and 50 m sack race. Fun-filled activities such as Tug of War, Passing the Ball and Musical Chair were also organized, drawing active participation from women of different age groups and creating a lively atmosphere at the venue.

An energetic Aerobic/Zumba demonstration was also presented by the ladies of the SYA Zumba Class, adding colour and vibrancy to the celebration and inspiring many participants to adopt regular fitness activities.

The closing ceremony was graced by Ms. Ambika Ratnoo, Director (Power), A&N Administration, as the chief guest, in the presence of Mr. Gyan Sheel Dubey, Head of Office, Directorate of Education. The winners of the various competitions were honoured with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for their outstanding performances.

A large number of women from different parts of Sri Vijaya Puram and nearby areas actively participated in the programme, making the event a grand success. The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs appreciated the enthusiastic support of all participants, officials and volunteers and reiterated its commitment to continue organizing such initiatives to encourage greater participation of women in sports and physical activities across the Islands.
