Campbell Bay, 17 December 2022

On 25th November 2022, early in the morning when trainees of Sports Authority of India were practising rowing and kayaking in the Boat House Area of Sippighat, they found the dead body of a female infant floating in the water. Soon the Coach was informed, who called up the Police and then the body was recovered.

On 15th December 2022, at about 10:30 Pm, a cloth seller was fishing at Joda Kilan, when suddenly a green-coloured carry bag (typically used to carry vegetables and groceries) got stuck in his net. The dead body of an infant girl child was found inside the bag.

The duration between the discovery of both dead bodies is less than a month. Both bodies were found inside the water in the creek area.

The discovery of the dead bodies of two infants in less than 30 days is a serious issue and points to an increase in female infanticide in the Islands.

According to sources, police is investigating both cases thoroughly and are trying to track the family of the deceased female infants in both cases.

Female infanticide was never considered prevalent in the Islands, but the discovery of the bodies of the two female infants less than thirty days apart is worrisome.
