The Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Som Parkash, IAS (Retd), currently on an official visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, conducted an inspection of key infrastructure projects on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island).
On February 13, 2024, Minister Som Parkash visited the Swaraj Dweep Jetty, where he personally inspected the newly constructed approach way. During his visit, he also visited the Sagarmala Project site and was briefed on various aspects of the project, including its cost, passenger hall capacity, current work status, and expected completion date. The Secretary of Shipping, Mr. Arjun Sharma, the Special Secretary of Shipping, Mr. Amit Kale, along with officials from the Port Management Board (PMB) and Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works (ALHW), accompanied the Minister during this inspection.
Following the inspection at Swaraj Dweep, a presentation was held at the Hotel Taj Exotica’s conference hall on the ambitious Great Nicobar Island project. The presentation, conducted through a power point, provided detailed insights into the progress and plans for the development of infrastructure on Great Nicobar Island.
The visit of Minister Som Parkash underscores the Government of India’s commitment to the development and enhancement of infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These islands, strategically located in the Bay of Bengal, hold immense potential for economic growth and tourism, and the ongoing projects aim to unlock this potential for the benefit of the region and the nation as a whole.
The Minister’s visit and detailed inspection signify the government’s proactive approach towards ensuring timely completion and effective implementation of critical infrastructure projects in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, thereby facilitating sustainable development.
