Marking the 77th Republic Day celebrations, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Mr. Nityanand Rai unfurled the National Flag at the historic Viper Island in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, symbolising national pride, unity and remembrance of India’s freedom struggle.
The flag-hoisting formed part of a special campaign being undertaken by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to hoist the National Flag on all 836 islands of the archipelago on occasions of national importance, including Independence Day and Republic Day. The initiative is in line with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to strengthen coastal security and is being carried out under the guidance of Hon’ble Union Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah.
The ceremony was attended by the Hon’ble Member of Parliament for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, the Chief Secretary of the A&N Administration, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, along with senior officers of the Administration.
Viper Island occupies a prominent place in India’s freedom movement, having served as one of the earliest sites where Indian freedom fighters were imprisoned by the British colonial regime prior to the construction of the Cellular Jail. The island stands as a reminder of the immense sacrifices, suffering and resilience of those who fought for the country’s independence under harsh and inhumane conditions.
Unfurling the National Flag at this historic location served as a solemn tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters, while also symbolising India’s unwavering sovereignty, maritime security and firm commitment to safeguarding its maritime borders.
