Unions affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) are organising a series of programmes across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today in support of the All India General Strike called by the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and employees’ organisations.

According to a press release issued by CITU, crores of workers from both organised and unorganised sectors across the country are observing the general strike on Thursday to protest against the implementation of the four labour codes. The unions have alleged that the labour codes are designed to benefit corporate interests at the cost of workers and have also opposed what they termed as anti-working class policies of the Modi government.

In the Union Territory, the main programme will be held at Tiranga Park, Port Blair. As per the press release, leaders of CITU and various affiliated unions will sit on a mass dharna from 3.30 p.m., while hundreds of workers are expected to join the protest from 4.30 p.m. The dharna will be followed by a public meeting at the same venue.

The press release further stated that processions, mass dharnas and demonstrations are being conducted across all three districts of the islands as part of the coordinated nationwide action.
