Veer Savarkar International Airport conducted a Fog-Preparedness Meeting on December 13 as part of its annual winter operations planning to ensure safe, smooth and efficient aircraft operations during fog-related conditions.

The meeting was chaired by the airport authorities and witnessed participation from representatives of all key stakeholders, including airlines, ground handling agencies, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) Units, and the airport’s Operations wing.

During the meeting, stakeholders were comprehensively briefed on the airport’s Fog Management Plan. Detailed deliberations were held on the roles and responsibilities of each agency, coordination mechanisms, communication protocols, passenger facilitation measures, and the readiness of critical infrastructure such as airfield lighting systems, Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), Runway Visual Range (RVR) equipment and other navigational aids.

Airport Director Mr. Muneer Madampat informed that although Veer Savarkar International Airport is generally not prone to fog, preparedness is essential to effectively manage any exigencies arising from fog-related disruptions at other major airports, which could subsequently lead to flight delays at the island airport.

Emphasis was laid on the timely dissemination of weather information, strict adherence to safety procedures, availability of trained manpower and seamless inter-agency coordination during fog conditions. Stakeholders were advised to remain vigilant and ensure compliance with prescribed standard operating procedures to minimise operational disruptions while enhancing passenger safety and comfort.

The airport authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency during the forthcoming fog season through proactive planning, coordination and preparedness.
