Vehicular movement of all vehicles on the Chatham Bridge is now officially permitted up to the landward-side hard embankment surface area of the New Vehicle Ferry Jetty at Chatham, the District Administration announced on Saturday.

The decision follows Notification No. 9-170/LS/2018/PF-I/3258 dated 27 June 2025, which regulated movement of heavy vehicles over the bridge. It comes after a comprehensive inspection and technical assessment conducted by the Port Management Board, Andaman Lakshadweep Harbour Works, and the Andaman Public Works Department.

Authorities said the restriction is necessary to ensure the structural safety of the bridge and prevent undue stress on vulnerable sections of the bridge and adjoining infrastructure. Limiting vehicle movement to the designated area is expected to maintain the safe and efficient operation of both vehicular traffic and ferry-related activities in the region.

The administration has directed all concerned departments, enforcement agencies, and transport operators to strictly comply with the guidelines. Any violation or non-compliance will be taken seriously, as the measures are critical for public safety and uninterrupted traffic management, the order issued by South Andaman District Magistrate Arjun Sharma stated.
