A Veterinary Health and Infertility Camp was organized by the Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan, under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (DAH&VS), A&N Administration, in collaboration with ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram on 19th October 2024. The camp, held at Indira Nagar under the Humfrygunj Gram Panchayat, aimed to address infertility problems among cattle, a growing concern that causes significant economic losses for local farmers.

During the camp, veterinarians examined 11 cows suffering from infertility. The animals underwent thorough check-ups, and based on their diagnoses, the veterinary team provided necessary treatments and offered expert advice to the farmers on how to manage their cattle’s reproductive health.

In addition to treating the animals, over 20 farmers in attendance received medicines and guidance on best practices for cattle rearing. This effort is part of a broader initiative by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services to enhance the health and productivity of cattle across the union territory.

The camp is one of many that the Department plans to organize in milk-producing areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These camps, combined with the Department’s scheme for assured female calves using sex-sorted semen, are expected to increase the number of milk-producing animals in the coming years, benefiting the local dairy industry.

The camp saw the participation of Dr. K.A. Naveen, Director of DAH&VS, Dr. Perumal P, Senior Scientist from ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram, and Dr. Parag Deori, Senior Veterinary Officer, along with the dedicated staff of the Veterinary Dispensary, Manglutan.

This initiative reflects the ongoing efforts of the A&N Administration to support local farmers and boost cattle productivity, ensuring economic growth and stability in the region’s dairy sector.
