Responding to a long-standing demand from residents and Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) Department inaugurated a Veterinary Sub Dispensary (VSD) in Rabindra Nagar Panchayat, Little Andaman, on July 1, 2025. The facility has begun functioning from a temporary accommodation, marking a significant step in improving veterinary care access for the rural community.
The inaugural ceremony witnessed the presence of the Pradhan, Ex-Pradhan, Sarpanch, PRI members, and a large number of villagers. Community members welcomed the initiative, which is expected to greatly benefit the local livestock and poultry-rearing population.
To support and promote backyard farming, the department also distributed around 140 ducklings, 60 duck eggs, and 300 quail eggs to villagers during the event.
The new dispensary will serve a population of around 5,000 residents across 700 households, covering approximately 1,500 livestock, 500 dogs, and 9,000 poultry and ducks—serving a total of nearly 11,000 animals.
The establishment of the VSD underscores the AH&VS Department’s commitment to enhancing animal healthcare services and promoting sustainable livelihoods in remote areas of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Villagers and PRI representatives expressed their gratitude to the department and the A&N Administration, particularly acknowledging the efforts of the Secretary (AH&VS), for fulfilling a critical community need.
