A village-to-village drive under the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY), a Government of India scheme aimed at skill development and employment generation for rural youth, was organized by the CD Block, Car Nicobar, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Car Nicobar, at the Kakana Community Hall on Saturday.

The programme focused on the formation of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and sensitizing the farming community about the advantages of collective farming, improved market linkages and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Officials emphasized that collective approaches can help small and marginal farmers enhance productivity, reduce costs and secure better returns for their produce.

Addressing the gathering, the Agriculture Officer, Car Nicobar, highlighted the importance of mechanized processing in reducing moisture content during copra preparation, leading to improved quality and higher market value. He encouraged community groups and Self Help Groups (SHGs) to take up the role of Operating Entity for the mechanized Copra Drying and Vacuum Packaging Unit installed at the Multi-Purpose Farm, Perka. The facility, he noted, offers farmers an opportunity to obtain better prices through quality enhancement and value addition.

The Extension Officer (in-charge), CD Block, Car Nicobar, briefed participants on the Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Coconut Drying) under the VB-G RAM G Act, as well as the free residential skill training opportunities available under DDU-GKY 2.0. He underlined the scope for employment and entrepreneurship among rural youth through these initiatives.

Officials also spoke about future opportunities in coconut-based enterprises, including oil extraction units (cold and hot press), handicrafts and value-added products such as coir mats, ropes, charcoal and confectionery items, which can further strengthen rural livelihoods.

The programme witnessed active participation from the Village Headman, farmers and youth, reflecting growing interest in collective farming and skill-based livelihood initiatives in Car Nicobar.
