Nicobar Times had earlier reported about the Drinking Water Crises in Makachua village of Little Nicobar Island. The First Captain of Makachua had sent a signal regarding water crises in the village to the Assistant Commissioner, Campbell Bay.
To provide relief to the villagers, Andaman Public Works Department has sent the first consignment of 3000 litres of fresh water from Campbell Bay to Makachua early in the morning today by boat.
Makachua is five hours by fishing boat from Campbell Bay. The water being sent by Andaman Public Works Department will bring much needed relief for the tribal villagers.
The 3000 litres of water sent today is the first consignment and if the situation of the rainfall remains the same in Makachua more water will have to be dispatched on regular intervals.
Innovative solutions are needed to solve the water crises at Makachua merely construction of ponds under MNEREGA will not solve the water crises in these remote costal regions.
1) Rain water harvesting technique attached to all houses as early as possible.
2) There should be an RO plant of adequate capacity setup plan so as reverse seawater .
3) Meanwhile tender should be called out for delivering water in cans to these regions till some permanent setup is done.
