Water sports activities have resumed at Wandoor after several years, marking a significant boost for tourism and local livelihoods in South Andaman. The regulated water sports operations were formally flagged off by the Chief Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, in the presence of senior officers of the Administration, Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad South Andaman Mr. Prakash Adhikari, representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions, tourism stakeholders and local boat operators on 20th January 2026.

The resumption of water sports follows sustained efforts by the Directorate of Information, Publicity & Tourism (IP&T), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, to promote regulated and sustainable tourism while addressing a long-pending demand of local residents and tourism stakeholders at Wandoor.

According to officials, the initiative is based on a comprehensive Risk Assessment Study conducted by the National Institute of Water Sports (NIWS), Goa, under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. The study recommended the introduction of specific activities, including Glass Bottom Boat rides and Parasailing, within clearly demarcated operational zones to ensure safety and environmental protection.

The Administration has stated that permissions for operating these water sports will be granted strictly in accordance with prescribed sustainability norms and environmental safeguards, with an emphasis on responsible tourism practices.

Officials of the IP&T described the development as a landmark step towards reviving eco-friendly tourism activities in the islands. The launch of regulated water sports at Wandoor is expected to enhance the overall visitor experience, create employment opportunities for local boat operators and youth, and further strengthen the Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ position as a premier eco-tourism destination.
