Campbell Bay, 7 April 2022

Classes were shut down at Govt. Senior Secondary School, Campbell Bay today due to waterlogging in the school premises. Water had entered the corridors, office and classrooms due to heavy rain coupled with high tide.

It is being reported that the CC drain located at Low Point, Campbell Bay was overflowing because of high tide which led to waterlogging near GSSS Campbell Bay and nearby areas.

The students were sent back to their homes by the school authorities as it was not possible to conduct classes in such a situation.

Sources informed Nicobar Times that a proper drainage system needs to be developed to carry water from the school premises and nearby areas to the sea. The estimate is said to be ready for the proposed drainage system but the work cannot be taken up because the said work doesn’t feature in the list of planned works of the Education Department.

The waterlogging in the premises of GSSS Campbell Bay is not common and it was a result of heavy rains in the morning coupled with high tide.

The water from the school premises receded with the tide.

It is important that a failproof drainage system needs to be developed near the low lying areas of Campbell Bay so that the general public does not face inconvenience during heavy rains.

Post-Tsunami several areas of Campbell Bay witnessed seawater accumulation and many of these areas remain waterlogged throughout the year even today. Authorities have not been able to develop a proper drainage system in many areas of Campbell Bay which leads to water accumulation.

A complete revamp of the drainage system in many areas of Campbell Bay is required to stop the problem of water accumulation during heavy rains and high tides.
