A weekend community yoga session was inaugurated at the Sippighat Panchayat Community Hall on March 7 under an initiative of the District Health Society (District Administration, South Andaman) in coordination with the Directorate of Health Services to promote community participation in yoga and healthy living.
Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman, Ms. Purva Garg, inaugurated the session and also participated in the yoga practice protocol along with the Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Sippighat, officials from the District Administration and the Health Department, and members of the public from the Sippighat area.
During the inaugural session, the Deputy Commissioner informed that community-level yoga sessions have already been underway across South Andaman district. As part of the initiative, dedicated weekend yoga sessions will now be conducted every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at identified community halls and venues to further encourage wider public participation. In addition, weekly yoga sessions are also being organized at all health centres in the district.
The initiative aims to promote healthy lifestyle practices and create awareness about preventive health through regular yoga activities. Officials said such activities can play an important role in improving physical fitness, enhancing mental well-being, and preventing non-communicable diseases.
Participants from local communities across 55 identified community-level venues also actively took part in yoga sessions held on the day, highlighting the growing interest in physical activity and wellness practices.
The District Administration and the Health Department have encouraged residents to actively participate in these sessions being conducted every weekend at community venues and weekly at health centres. Authorities noted that the programme is being implemented with the regular coordination and support of Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members to promote holistic health and well-being within the community.
