In a proactive move, the vigilant team at PS Billiground successfully apprehended a suspect involved in the illegal sale of venison at Billiground Bazaar. The operation, executed on February 5, 2024, was orchestrated based on credible information received by the police.
Led by Sub-Inspector MV Shiju Kumar, the team included Sub-Inspector MJ Indrajit, In-charge of OP Betapur, Head Constable Amrita Bawali, and Police Constables Anand Kumar and Mohd Mustafa. The collaboration culminated in the interception of the suspect, identified as Mr. Ajeet Toppo.
Mr. Toppo, 35, a resident of Bamboo Nallah, Webi, Mayabunder, was observed approaching the Police booth with a shoulder bag. However, his suspicious behaviour, marked by a noticeable hesitation and a quick retreat upon spotting the police, prompted the team to take immediate action.
A thorough search of the suspect’s shoulder bag revealed wildlife-protected red meat, suspected to be venison. During subsequent interrogation, Ajeet Toppo admitted to the possession of the venison meat. In accordance with the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, the seized meat, weighing 12 kg, was confiscated by SI MV Shiju Kumar, SHO PS Billiground.
The accused was promptly arrested, and all necessary formalities were followed. The authorities immediately notified the Range Officer Betapur about the meat seizure. Subsequently, both the confiscated meat and the arrested individual were handed over to forest officials for further legal action.
The operation was conducted under the vigilant eye of Mr. Rahul Nair IPS, SDPO Rangat, with overall direction and supervision from Ms. Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, Superintendent of Police, North & Middle Andaman District.
