Wildlife Division DRMs Felicitated for Rescuing Passengers After Pawan Hans Helicopter’s Forced Sea Landing Near Mayabunder

Three Daily Rated Mazdoors (DRMs) of the Wildlife Division, Mayabunder, under the Department of Environment & Forests, were felicitated on Monday for their exemplary courage and swift response in rescuing passengers following the forced landing of a Pawan Hans helicopter in the sea near Tota Tikery, Mayabunder.

The incident occurred on the morning of February 24, 2026, when a Pawan Hans Limited helicopter, en route to Mayabunder from Rangat Helipad, was compelled to make a forced landing in the sea off Mayabunder.

At the time of the incident, an engine dinghy of the Wildlife Division, Mayabunder, was on its way to the Interview Island Protection Camp carrying essential stores and supplies. On board were Forest Department DRMs Saw Sakari, Saw Thomas and Saw Manashe, along with a police personnel.

During their transit, the team witnessed the helicopter descending and making the emergency landing in the sea. Despite being at a short distance from the impact site, they immediately informed their Camp Officer about the incident and sought instructions. On receiving directions to extend assistance, the team promptly diverted their dinghy towards the site without hesitation.

Displaying remarkable presence of mind and bravery, the three DRMs, along with the police personnel, successfully evacuated all passengers from the helicopter, including an infant, ensuring their safe rescue.

In recognition of their outstanding service, dedication to duty and courage in the face of an unforeseen emergency, a felicitation ceremony was organised at the Committee Room of Van Sadan, Haddo. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, felicitated the three DRMs for their commendable act.
