The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) conducted a specialized training program on Andaman goat milk cheese making for women of the Sooraj Self-Help Group (SHG) in Roglachang, Baratang, on September 24.

The initiative aims to conserve the germplasm of the native Andaman goat, promote its rearing, and equip women with skills that can boost economic opportunities and enhance family nutrition.

The training was led by Dr. Inderjit Kaur and Dr. Sabitawati, Senior Veterinary Officers, who guided participants through the techniques of producing cheese from Andaman goat milk, emphasizing its health benefits in managing various ailments. The sessions also highlighted the importance of preserving the native goat breed, renowned for its adaptability to local conditions, to support sustainable livestock farming.

The enthusiastic participation of Sooraj SHG members demonstrated their commitment to skill development and community welfare. The program aligns with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration’s vision of promoting sustainable animal husbandry and empowering marginalized communities through skill-based initiatives.
