A one-day workshop on the theme “Judicious Use of Chemical and Organic Agriculture Inputs” was organized at the Community Hall in Chouldari on June 11, 2025, with the objective of sensitizing farmers about the balanced use of fertilizers for the sustainable development of agriculture and the island ecosystem.
The Secretary (Agriculture), A&N Administration, who graced the occasion as the chief guest, emphasized the urgent need to reduce the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and promote sustainable agricultural practices suitable for island conditions. Citing the tragic effects of the Endosulfan pesticide in Kerala and the “cancer train” of Punjab, the Secretary highlighted the long-term consequences of chemical overuse in agriculture.
In his welcome address, the Joint Director (Agriculture) informed that the workshop was organized under the guidance of the Chief Secretary and the Secretary (Agriculture), A&N Administration. He stressed the importance of the initiative in fostering balanced agricultural practices for long-term sustainability.
Ms. Pramila Kumari, Zilla Parishad Member, Chouldari, and Ms. Chaitali Roy, Samiti Member, Chouldari, addressed the gathering as guests of honour. They spoke on the growing importance of integrating organic manures, bio-fertilizers, and chemical fertilizers to enhance soil health and crop productivity.
The technical session featured presentations by Mr. Mohit, SMS, KVK, and Dr. Y. Ramakrishna, Incharge, KVK, on the judicious combination of organic and chemical inputs. Dr. Talaviya Harshang Kumar, Scientist from ICAR-CIARI, discussed the adverse effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Dr. Sivagnanam, Plant Protection Officer, CIPMC, spoke on pest and disease management through Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Presentations were also delivered by Dr. S.C. Rekha, Assistant Director (Agriculture), and Dr. Sahana Begum, Agriculture Officer, on Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) and bio-input preparation techniques.
Informative videos showcasing the harmful effects of excessive chemical use were screened for the benefit of the farmers.
The workshop also featured an interactive session where farmers shared their perspectives and feedback on sustainable input usage. A total of 103 participants, including progressive farmers, SHG members, PRI representatives, and Agriculture Department staff, attended the programme.
