World Coconut Day Celebrated at Netaji Nagar Panchayat Hall in Little Andaman

World Coconut Day 2025 was celebrated with enthusiasm at the Panchayat Hall, Netaji Nagar Village, Little Andaman, bringing together community leaders, officials, and self-help groups in recognition of the importance of coconut cultivation and its allied industries.

The event was inaugurated by Mr. S. Parmanathan, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Little Andaman, who served as the chief guest. Mr. Andrew Mosses, First Captain, Tribal Council, Harminder Bay, attended as the guest of honour. Among other dignitaries present were Mr. Festus Nathaniel, Secretary, Tribal Council, Harminder Bay; Mr. Raja, Up-Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Little Andaman; Mr. K. Rudhramoorthy, Pradhan, Hutbay; and Mr. Bidyut Roy, Pradhan, Netaji Nagar. Officials from the Departments of Industries, Social Welfare, and Fisheries, along with Anganwadi workers and members of various Self-Help Groups, also took part in the celebration.

Addressing the gathering, the chief guest urged farmers to adopt coconut-based farming systems and praised the efforts of the Agriculture Department, Little Andaman, for organizing the programme. Leaders including the Pradhan of Hutbay, Pradhan of Netaji Nagar, the Secretary of the Tribal Council, and the Up-Pramukh of the Panchayat Samiti also spoke on the occasion, highlighting the cultural and economic significance of coconut.

Earlier, the Assistant Director (Agriculture) welcomed the participants and underlined the importance of celebrating World Coconut Day to spread awareness about sustainable coconut cultivation.

The event also featured cookery competitions—both sweet and savoury—as well as handicraft contests. Anganwadi workers and Self-Help Groups showcased their creativity and skill, earning appreciation for their exceptional performances. (Story Based on PR)
