World Malaria Day was marked with fervour and determination on April 25 in the Islands as health authorities, educators, and community members gathered at the Conference Hall of GSSS Haddo, Port Blair. The event, organised in collaboration with the Directorate of Health Services and UT Health Mission, focused on the theme ‘Accelerating the fight against Malaria for a more equitable world’.
The esteemed panel included Dr. Suja Antony, Director of Health Services, as the chief guest, and Mr. D. P. Chourasia, Principal of GSSS Haddo, as the guest of honour.
In her address, Dr. Suja Antony underscored the significance of World Malaria Day, emphasising the need for concerted efforts in combating the disease. Dr. B Ajit Kumar, Joint Secretary (NVBDCP)/Deputy Director (Malaria), DHS, shed light on the critical aspects of early detection, complete treatment, and vector control, crucial for malaria elimination. He stressed the importance of mosquito bed nets, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children under 5 years and pregnant women, to prevent mosquito bites.
Dr. S. Sunil Kumar, CMO (NFSG)/Deputy Director (Health Education), highlighted the pivotal role of children in spreading awareness about malaria prevention and mosquito control within the community. He emphasised that achieving zero malaria requires active participation from the community in the Malaria Control Programme, expressing gratitude for their efforts in reducing malaria incidence in the A&N Islands.
The event commenced with a warm welcome from Mr. Madhu Prakash, District Malaria Officer, NVBDCP Unit. Mr. Polycarb, PGT, GSSS Haddo, Port Blair, concluded the program with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and stakeholders for their contributions.
