The Zonal Agriculture Office, South Andaman, in collaboration with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Prothrapur Block, observed World Soil Day 2025 at Calicut Village on 5th December 2025, alongside a two-day training programme on Soil and Water Conservation Techniques. The event was held under this year’s global theme, “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities.”

Mr. T. Yaghambaram, Pradhan of Gram Panchayat Calicut, attended the programme as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he encouraged farmers to adopt scientific soil and water conservation methods to preserve natural resources and ensure agricultural sustainability for future generations.

Earlier, welcoming the participants, Dr. S. C. Rekha, Assistant Director (Agriculture), South Andaman, highlighted the critical role of soil health in food security and urged community participation in adopting sustainable farming practices.

Technical sessions were conducted by Agriculture Officers Mr. Ravi Ch. Suthradhar and Ms. Udaya Kumari, with discussions focusing on practical soil and water conservation methods suitable for local conditions. Farmers actively engaged in the sessions, raising queries and sharing on-ground challenges, which enriched the knowledge exchange.

As part of the programme, Soil Health Cards were distributed to local farmers to help them better understand nutrient levels in their fields and plan appropriate soil management practices.

The event concluded with an emphasis on continued awareness and capacity-building to strengthen sustainable agriculture across the region.
