World Soil Day Celebrated Across Nicobar District with Focus on Sustainable Soil Health

The Department of Agriculture, Car Nicobar, marked World Soil Day on December 5 with a series of awareness programmes aimed at promoting sustainable soil management and improving soil health among the farming community. The main event was organised at Malacca Village, Car Nicobar, where Mr. Micah, 1st Headman, graced the occasion as chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Micah urged farmers to make better use of organic waste available in their farms and home gardens to enhance soil fertility. He also encouraged them to strictly follow the recommendations provided in the Soil Health Card, which plays a key role in guiding scientific soil management. Soil Health Cards were distributed to farmers during the programme.

Earlier, Mr. C. Vinod Kumar, Assistant Director (Soil), welcomed participants and highlighted the significance of World Soil Day, celebrated this year with the theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities.” He emphasised soil’s vital role in ensuring food security, water conservation, climate resilience, and public health.

Experts from KVK-CIARI, including Dr. Santosh Kumar, Sr. Scientist & Head, and Dr. Ajmal, Subject Matter Specialist, also addressed the gathering. Ms. R. Bhu Bharthy, Agriculture Officer, conducted an informative session on improving soil health through composting and organic waste management.

Meanwhile, World Soil Day 2025 was also commemorated at the Community Hall, Rajiv Nagar, Campbell Bay, on December 5. Mr. Barnabas, Chairman of the Tribal Council, Great Nicobar, inaugurated the programme. Farmers were sensitised on the need to adopt sustainable soil management practices to protect agricultural productivity and maintain ecological balance in alignment with global sustainable development goals.

During the event, Mr. Sitaram, Junior Agriculture Assistant, discussed key issues related to soil pollution and its management. Ms. Yasmeen, Veterinary Compounder, AH & VS, spoke about the broader importance of observing World Soil Day. Soil Health Cards were also distributed to farmers in Campbell Bay.

The celebrations across Nicobar District reinforced the significance of nurturing soil health as the foundation of resilient agriculture and sustainable livelihoods. (Story Based on PR)
