In celebration of World Tourism Day 2023, which is themed ‘Tourism and Green Investment,’ the Tourism Department of the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Administration, in collaboration with tourism stakeholders, various line Departments, and India Tourism, has organised a series of exciting events. The festivities commenced on 22nd September 2023, with the launch of the three-day World Tourism Day Knockout Beach Volleyball Tournament, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Corbyn’s Cove Beach.
Mr. Binay Bhushan, IAS, the Secretary of Information, Publicity, and Tourism, had the honour of inaugurating the event. In the presence of the guest of honour, Mr. Mohd. Jadwet, Chairman of the Andaman Chapter of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). Mr. Bhushan cut the ribbon and extended his best wishes to the participating teams. He also marked the commencement of the tournament by flipping the coin for team selection and serving the first ball, officially inaugurating the competition.
The opening day of the tournament saw action-packed matches, with Seva Bharat-A defeating TGCE-A in the Men’s category, while TGCE secured victory against Diglipur in the Women’s category. The matches continued until late in the evening, showcasing the skills and competitive spirit of the participants.
The tournament garnered an overwhelming response, with teams hailing from various parts of the islands, ranging from Diglipur in the North to Kamorta in the South. A total of 38 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams, representing institutions like TGCE, JNRM, ANCOL, and departments including IP&T and the Police team (Ladies), are participating in the competition. The players enjoyed the perfect gaming atmosphere, complemented by light showers, cool breezes, and the backdrop of the azure blue sea, allowing them to showcase their exceptional sporting talents.
The grand finale is scheduled to take place on September 24 at the same venue, where the prize distribution ceremony will be held. The winning teams will receive generous prize money, with Rs. 20,000 for the first-place team, Rs. 15,000 for the second-place team, and Rs. 10,000 for the third-place team. Additionally, trophies and certificates will be presented to the deserving winners, capping off what promises to be an exhilarating tournament celebrating both sport and tourism.
