The Wildlife Division, Sri Vijaya Puram, recently celebrated World Wetlands Day 2026 with the theme “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage”, involving students from MES Senior Secondary School, Azad Nagar, and St. Mary’s Senior Secondary School, Bathubasti.
The programme was organised with the objective of sensitising young minds to the importance of wetland conservation and the role wetlands play in sustaining ecological balance. During the event, students were briefed on the concept of wetlands, their ecological significance, rich biodiversity, and the urgent need for their protection.
An interactive session enabled students to gain first-hand knowledge about wetland ecosystems and their environmental benefits, fostering greater awareness and interest in conservation efforts. To further promote environmental consciousness among students, slogan writing and painting competitions were also organised at MES Senior Secondary School.
The observance highlighted the importance of engaging students in conservation initiatives and reinforcing the link between traditional knowledge, cultural heritage, and sustainable management of wetlands.
