The Zonal Fisheries Office for North & Middle Andaman has launched a special outreach initiative to raise awareness among local fishermen and youth about various government schemes offered by the Department of Fisheries under the Andaman & Nicobar Administration. As part of this effort, a dedicated camp was held at the Fish Landing Center (FLC) in Nimbutala under the Rangat Sub-division on November 6, 2024, drawing a significant turnout from nearby fishing communities.
During the camp, fishermen were introduced to beneficial schemes, including opportunities to secure Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans and access facilities under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). The attendees also received guidance on sustainable fishing practices, such as the importance of mesh size regulation and the harmful impact of ghost nets on marine life.
Addressing the gathering, the Assistant Director of Fisheries encouraged the fishermen and local community leaders to utilise these schemes to support their livelihoods and enhance the fishing industry in the region.
Following the Nimbutala camp, a similar program was organised on November 8, 2024, at Mohanpur village under Gram Panchayat, Kishorinagar. This session was attended by a large number of fishermen, fish farmers, and unemployed youth. Notably, three beneficiaries expressed interest in constructing fish kiosks, while others explored options for acquiring insulated vehicles and icebox-equipped two-wheelers to support their fisheries ventures.
In the coming weeks, the Zonal Fisheries Office plans to organise more such camps across the district, particularly targeting coastal villages, to extend the benefits of these schemes to a wider audience. These initiatives are being conducted under the guidance of the Director of Fisheries, Ms. Jagtap Kalyani Rajendra, with a focus on promoting sustainable fishing and improving the welfare of local fishing communities.
