ZSI A&N Regional Centre Organises One-Week Training Programme on Coastal & Marine Biodiversity for IFS Officers

The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, inaugurated a week-long compulsory training programme for Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers on “Coastal and Marine Biodiversity of Island Ecosystem” today at Minni Bay. The programme will run from 08 to 12 December 2025.

Mr. Balachandran, IAS (Retd.), Former Secretary to the Government of India, attended the event as the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address, he emphasised the vital role of coastal and marine ecosystems in maintaining environmental health and described the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as one of the world’s major biodiversity hotspots. He reminded the participating officers of their dual responsibility as protectors of forests and guardians of India’s vast marine wealth. Highlighting the complexity of marine ecosystems, he called for inter-departmental collaboration, stronger policies, and effective implementation of Central and State legislations for marine conservation.

Earlier, Dr. Sivaperuman, Additional Director, ZSI, welcomed the participants and outlined the objectives and expected outcomes of the training.

Delivering the Special Address, Dr. Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, spoke about the region’s unique flora and fauna, with a special focus on coastal and marine biodiversity.

A total of 21 Forest Officials from different States are attending the programme, which includes field visits to ecologically significant locations across the islands. (Story Based on PIB PR)
