A one-day seminar to mark World Ozone Day 2025 was organised on 12th September 2025, at the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Sri Vijaya Puram, with the theme “From Science to Global Action.” The event was inaugurated by Mr. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Department of Environment & Forests, A&N Islands.

The seminar brought together 71 students and teachers from various schools and colleges. It aimed to inspire young minds to showcase their knowledge and creativity, while also raising awareness on environmental concerns, ozone depletion, and practical steps individuals can take to reduce ozone-depleting substances.

In his inaugural address, Mr. Sinha highlighted the significance of September 16 as World Ozone Day, commemorating the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol—widely regarded as one of the most successful international environmental agreements. He stressed that protecting the ozone layer is vital to safeguarding life on Earth and urged people to adopt eco-friendly practices such as saving energy, planting trees, using safer products, and promoting sustainable lifestyles.

Dr. Anil Addepally, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, reiterated the Forest Department’s commitment to protecting the islands’ greenery. He encouraged citizens to plant trees, suggesting that each person plant at least one sapling in their mother’s honour. He also assured that free seedlings are available at departmental nurseries.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. C. Sivaperuman, Additional Director, ZSI, underlined the importance of international environmental agreements such as the Vienna Convention (1985) and the Montreal Protocol (1987) in combating ozone depletion.

The valedictory function was graced by Dr. E. B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, as the chief guest, and Prof. (Dr.) P. V. Nagendra Sarma, Principal, Andaman Law College, as the guest of honour.

Commending ZSI’s efforts, Dr. Chakurkar lauded the institute for setting benchmarks in scientific awareness campaigns through its observance of environmental days. Prof. Sarma, in his address, emphasised the critical need for more scientists in India, noting that their dedication and intellect are key to strengthening the nation.

The seminar concluded with the distribution of certificates to all participating students and teachers.
