World Ozone Day, also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, will be observed globally on September 16. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1994, this day marks the anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, a pivotal treaty aimed at phasing out substances that deplete the ozone layer. The theme for World Ozone Day 2024, “Ozone for Life,” highlights the critical role the Montreal Protocol has played in the recovery of the ozone layer and its positive impact on mitigating climate change.

In celebration of World Ozone Day 2024, the EIACP Centre on Island Biodiversity, Zoological Survey of India, Port Blair, is organising a special exhibition on Island Faunal Diversity. The exhibition will run from September 10 to 14, showcasing the unique animal diversity of the islands through preserved faunal specimens, informative posters, pamphlets, and engaging videos.

The EIACP Centre has extended an invitation to students, teachers, and the general public to visit the exhibition and explore the island’s rich biodiversity. Schools and colleges are encouraged to arrange visits for their students to the museum during the exhibition period. Entry is free, and the exhibition will be open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

This event not only celebrates the global effort to protect the ozone layer but also aims to raise awareness about the unique and fragile ecosystems of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
