A resident of New Pahargaon near Police Quarter in Port Blair, has fallen victim to an online shopping scam, losing a staggering amount of Rs 5,90,202. In her written complaint addressed to the Station House Officer of the Cyber Crime Police Station in Port Blair, she detailed the harrowing experience.
According to the complaint filed on 15th April 2024, the victim recounts her encounter with an Instagram page named “karismathwedding” on 29th March 2024. Intrigued by the online shopping offerings, she contacted the page through a provided WhatsApp number, expressing interest in purchasing some dresses showcased on the Instagram page.
Following the caller’s instructions, the victim sent Rs 1998/- , she was then asked by the seller to send the amount of Rs. 1998/- in two separate transactions of amount Rs 799/- and Rs 1199/-. She complied and resent the amount of Rs. 1198/- in two separate transactions as instructed by the seller. However, when she requested a refund for the initial payment, she was directed to a Paytm group through a refund link. Upon clicking the link, she was prompted to click on the Pay button, which led to request for One-Time Password (OTP). She entered the OTP multiple times.
Sadly, she fell victim to the scam, resulting in a loss of Rs 5,90,202/- across several transactions.
The victim filed a complaint with the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) on 15th April 2024.
