In a significant step toward safeguarding the well-being of children, Port Blair Guru Ki Rasoi (PBGKR), in collaboration with the Education Department, successfully conducted an awareness camp aimed at sensitising educators about child abuse. The event, held at the Auditorium of Girls Senior Secondary School, was tailored to equip teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively address this sensitive issue.
Dr. Kushal Baidya, a psychiatrist and Assistant Professor at ANIIMS, led the camp with a comprehensive guide designed specifically for educators. His presentation focused on helping teachers communicate with children about the dangers of child abuse, and identifying the signs that might indicate a child is at risk.
Over 60 teachers and educators from various schools across the city participated in the camp, which emphasised the critical role educators play in detecting and preventing child abuse. Attendees were provided with strategies to create a supportive environment where children feel safe to speak up.
Speaking on the importance of the initiative, Mr. Mandeep Grewal, Founder and President of PBGKR, highlighted the pivotal role teachers have in protecting children. “Teachers are often the first to notice when something is wrong in a child’s life. This camp was designed to empower educators with the knowledge and skills they need to protect children from abuse and to foster an environment where children feel safe to speak up,” Grewal said.
The camp is part of PBGKR’s broader mission to combat child abuse and promote the well-being of children across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Through education and awareness, the organisation aims to build a community where every child feels safe, supported, and protected.
This awareness camp marks a key effort in PBGKR’s ongoing commitment to creating a safer environment for children, ensuring that educators are well-equipped to address and prevent child abuse in their schools and communities.
