Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorm Warning for A&N Islands; Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore

Authorities have issued a series of weather warnings for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next several days.

According to the bulletin, heavy rainfall measuring 7–11 cm is very likely at one or two places across the A&N Islands today (Nov. 20). Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph and lightning are also expected at isolated locations.

On Nov. 21 and 22, Nicobar Island is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in the range of 7–20 cm. Heavy rainfall is also expected at one or two places over Andaman Island during this period. Thunderstorm activity with gusty winds and lightning is expected to persist across the Islands.

Further forecasts show heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) at one or two places on Nov. 23, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and winds up to 50 kmph. Thunderstorms with similar wind speeds are also very likely on Nov. 24 and 25 across the A&N Islands.

In addition to the rainfall warnings, squally weather with surface wind speeds of 35–45 kmph, gusting to 55 kmph, is likely over the Andaman Sea. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the Andaman Sea till Nov. 23 due to unsafe sea conditions. Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 has been hoisted at Sri Vijaya Puram Port as a precautionary measure.

Residents and fishermen are urged to follow official advisories.
