In a bid to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process and counter the potential abuse of Short Message Services (SMSs) and various social media platforms during elections, the Andaman & Nicobar Police has launched a proactive initiative. Under the directives of the Election Commission of India (ECI), a dedicated WhatsApp number, R16;9531856083’, has been established for citizens to report any instances of misuse or dissemination of objectionable content.
The public is strongly encouraged to promptly notify authorities about any objectionable messages, providing crucial details such as the sender’s number. It is emphasized that such misuse of online platforms during elections may result in prosecution of the offenders.
Upon receiving reports, the Andaman & Nicobar Police will undertake thorough investigations, utilising the full spectrum of legal provisions outlined in the Indian Penal Code, Representation of the People Act, 1951, Information Technology Act-2000, Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, and various directives issued by the Election Commission of India. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that individuals engaging in electoral misconduct or online crimes are held accountable for their actions.
The cooperation and vigilance of citizens are pivotal in upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
