Cyber Fraud Alert: ₹50,000 Stolen from Garacharma Resident via Fake SBI Rewardz Link

A 44-year-old resident of Garacharma, South Andaman, has fallen victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme while he was at Campbell Bay in Nicobar District. The incident occurred on December 23, 2024, and was officially reported to the Cyber Crime Police Station.

The complainant, reported receiving a text message on his mobile phone that appeared to be from the State Bank of India (SBI). The message claimed he was eligible to redeem SBI Rewardz points and included a link, which led to a website resembling the bank’s official portal.

According to the FIR, believing the site to be authentic, the complainant entered sensitive personal and banking details into the online form. Within moments of submitting the information, ₹50,000 was fraudulently withdrawn from his bank account.

Realizing he had been duped, the complainant promptly filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The Cyber Crime Police subsequently registered an FIR under Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 on 13th May 2025.

This incident underscores the growing threat of cybercrime and the importance of timely public awareness and digital literacy to prevent such frauds.
