As part of the ongoing initiative ‘Sampark se Samadhan – Prashasan Gaon ki Ore,’ the Deputy Commissioner of North & Middle Andaman, Mr. Sushant Padha, IAS, undertook a two-day visit to Baratang on February 20 and 21, during which he held a series of meetings to review key developmental issues related to tourism, infrastructure and public amenities.

During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with members of the Fibre Boat Association and representatives of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) to discuss measures aimed at boosting tourism in the region. Key proposals highlighted during the discussions included improvement of infrastructure at the jetty and limestone cave areas, strengthening of safety arrangements and visitor amenities, better regulation and facilitation of boat services, and development of Baludera Beach as an emerging tourist destination.

Stakeholders also underscored the need for enhanced sea connectivity, particularly the proposed Baludera–Swaraj Dweep route with linkage to Long Island, which is expected to significantly increase tourist footfall in Baratang. The Deputy Commissioner appreciated the proactive suggestions and assured that the proposals would be examined in consultation with the concerned departments for feasible implementation.

The Deputy Commissioner also reviewed the progress of ongoing road and bridge projects with officials and contractors of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). He assessed the status of piling works and project timelines, and directed officials to expedite pending works. Specific instructions were issued to address local concerns at Sundergarh, Adazig, Nilambur Jetty and Kadamtala, and to ensure installation of appropriate safety measures near educational and health institutions.

In a separate meeting, the Deputy Commissioner held discussions with the Divisional Forest Officer and Revenue officials regarding long-pending forest and revenue land disputes that have been affecting developmental activities in Baratang. He emphasized the need for lawful and practical solutions to facilitate smooth progress of projects.

During his visit, Mr. Padha also toured remote villages including Khattakhari, Wrafter’s Creek, Rajatgarh, Nayagarh, Lorojig (EFA) and Sundergarh, where he interacted directly with residents to assess ground realities and address grievances firsthand. The visit reaffirmed the Administration’s focus on last-mile governance and inclusive development.

The Deputy Commissioner assured that all issues raised during the visit would be examined in coordination with the concerned departments for necessary action. The initiative will be extended to the remaining villages across the district in the coming months.

The ‘Sampark se Samadhan – Prashasan Gaon ki Ore’ programme continues to strengthen the connect between the Administration and citizens, ensuring that governance and public services reach every doorstep in North & Middle Andaman.
