The maiden DGP Cup State Level League-cum-Knockout Cricket Tournament 2023 got underway on 15 February 2023, at the historic Netaji Stadium. The tournament is being organized by A & N Police and was inaugurated by the Director General of Police, A & N Islands, Mr. Neeraj Thakur, IPS, in the presence of other senior officers of the Police Department and others. In his brief address on occasion, the DGP said, ‘this cricket tournament is being organized for the first time in these Islands in which 40 teams from different parts of the Islands, comprising of 640 youth are participating’.
The DGP further said that the Police Department has also been organizing various programmes in schools and villages. This tournament will encourage the youth to participate in sports who otherwise knowingly and unknowingly fall prey to drug abuse. This tournament not only moves the youth of the Islands one step closer to the success of the ‘Khelo India’ scheme, but it will also encourage sportsmanship in them, thus creating a healthy India. The DGP also congratulated the participating teams.
The inaugural match of DGP Cup 2023 was played between Jadwet Sporting Club and Gram Panchayat Wimberlygunj. JSC won the match by 35 runs. Captain of JSC, Mr. Sundaram, took 5 wickets in his spell of 4 overs giving only 25 runs, and was adjudged the man of the match. On 16th February, three matches will be played. The first match will be played between Diamond Star vs. Prem Nagar at 6 am, Bazar Titans vs. DYC Mithakhari at 9.30 am, and SK Brothers vs. Adidas at 1 pm.
