The dumpsters installed at most of the wards of Port Blair City are seen full of garbage these days, it is being alleged by the general public that the Municipal trucks are not picking up the garbage timely which is creating a filthy environment at most of the places.

Mr. Someshwar Rao, Ex-Councillor, Ward No. 2, informed Nicobar Times that the condition of cleanliness of the wards of Port Blair Municipal Council is deteriorating day by day as the authorities of Port Blair Municipal Council have ordered that the garbage from the dumpsters should be picked up just once in a week.

Mr. Someshwar Rao further explains that the residents have been informed by the Port Blair Municipal Council that the garbage has to be segregated and handed over to the staff. He further adds that the staff deployed for the purpose use just one bag to collect both the kinds of garbage, hence the public also doesn’t want to segregate the garbage as it is being mixed again by the garbage collection staff.

Mr. Someshwar Rao also informed Nicobar Times that the staff of the PBMC after collecting the garbage from the households simply dumps it in the dumpsters installed at the wards, which remains there until the truck picks up the garbage to transport it elsewhere.

It is being reported that the general public and different Ex-Councillors have complained to the authorities of the Port Blair Municipal Council several times, but no action has been taken to ensure that the garbage from the dumpsters of the wards is picked up on time.

Mr. Someshwar Rao, further, informed that he along with other Councillors of PBMC had visited Chennai for a tour and they witnessed that in Chennai the Corporation hires staff at fixed rates, who segregates the garbage for further processing. He added that the same had to be implemented in Port Blair, but due to various reasons, it did not materialise.

The main reason for the filthy condition of the dumpsters in different wards is being attributed to some recent order of the Port Blair Municipal Council restricting the collection of garbage from the dumpsters of different wards to just one day a week.

The authorities of Port Blair Municipal Council should look into the issue and take necessary action to ensure that the city remains hygienic.
