The ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI) organised its first-ever awareness programme on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in fisheries for freshwater fish farmers of Diglipur in North Andaman on January 3, 2025. The programme was conducted under the All India Network Project on Livestock and Fisheries (Fisheries Component).
The awareness programme was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Jai Sunder, Director (Acting), ICAR–CIARI, and focused on sensitising farmers about the responsible and judicious use of antibiotics in fish culture and disease management. Emphasis was laid on the risks associated with indiscriminate antibiotic use and the need to adopt sustainable practices to curb the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance.
Dr. J. Praveenraj, Scientist and Course Director, delivered a technical session highlighting viable alternatives to antibiotics in aquaculture. He educated farmers on the use of lime, potash and other eco-friendly chemicals and therapeutics for the prevention and effective management of disease outbreaks in freshwater aquaculture systems.
The programme saw the participation of around 50 fish farmers, including women farmers, who actively engaged in the interactive sessions. The event concluded with the administration of an oath pledging responsible use of antibiotics, reinforcing the importance of sustainable and responsible aquaculture practices.
The awareness initiative received positive feedback from the participants, who appreciated the practical guidance and knowledge shared during the programme.
