Hon’ble Member of Parliament from Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, has demanded a judicial enquiry into the death of Mr. P. Elango, a Founder Member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, allegedly due to medical negligence at GB Pant Hospital.

According to information provided by the family, Mr. P. Elango, son of Late A.P. Periyaswamy and a resident of Prem Nagar, Sri Vijaya Puram, was admitted to GB Pant Hospital at around 8:30 pm on February 4, 2026, after complaining of severe stomach pain. The family stated that he was physically stable at the time of admission.

As per the account shared by the family, Mr. Elango was administered injections and treatment after reaching the hospital. Later, doctors reportedly informed them that fluid had accumulated in his lungs, following which additional injections were given. His condition is said to have deteriorated rapidly thereafter, and he developed breathing difficulties. He was subsequently shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors later informed the family that he had suffered a heart attack. Mr. Elango was declared dead at around 11:45 pm the same night.

Expressing serious concern over the incident, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray stated that the bereaved family firmly believes that the death occurred due to medical negligence. The MP further alleged that similar incidents have taken place in the past, but effective action has not been taken, leading to growing public distrust in the healthcare system of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency, the MP called for a thorough judicial enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death. He said responsibility must be fixed after a proper investigation and strict action taken against those found accountable.

Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray also highlighted that such incidents not only cause irreparable loss to families but underscore the urgent need to strengthen medical services, monitoring mechanisms and accountability within the healthcare system of the Islands.
