Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray on Sunday flagged off two new buses at Diglipur, procured under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), aimed at strengthening public transportation in North & Middle Andaman district.

According to information issued by the MP Office, Sri Vijaya Puram, the newly inducted buses are expected to significantly enhance connectivity in the Diglipur region and provide much-needed relief to school students, senior citizens, and daily commuters along the designated routes.

The initiative has been projected as part of ongoing efforts to improve basic infrastructure and mobility facilities for residents of the remote northern region of the Islands, where public transport options remain limited and distances between villages are considerable.

However, as per records available on the official MPLADS portal, the procurement of the two buses was originally recommended during the tenure of the former Member of Parliament in the 17th Lok Sabha. The online work description reads: “Purchase & Supply of 02 Nos. (01 No. 26 seater and 01 No. 54 seater capacity) Buses BS VI phase-II with New Emission Norms for Diglipur Region.”

The recommendation was made on January 27, 2024, with a sanctioned amount of Rs. 86 lakh under MPLADS.

The buses as per MPLADS record include one 26-seater and one 54-seater vehicle, compliant with BS-VI Phase-II emission norms, aligning with current environmental standards. Their induction is expected to ease transportation challenges faced by residents, particularly in interior and rural stretches of Diglipur sub-division.

MPLADS is a Central Sector Scheme under which Members of Parliament recommend development works in their constituencies, with a focus on creating durable community assets. Funds are released in phases and works are executed by the district administration as per prescribed guidelines.
