Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Member of Parliament representing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has written to the Deputy Commissioner of Middle and North Andaman, seeking urgent intervention to improve basic amenities at Police Check Post No. 15 along the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR).
The check post, located between Kadamtala and Kausalya Nagar, is a vital stopover for commuters traveling between North & Middle Andaman to South Andaman, particularly for those awaiting the early morning convoy. Despite the high footfall, the location lacks essential facilities such as functional toilets and access to drinking water, causing hardship to passengers, transport staff, and tourists alike.
Highlighting the deteriorated condition of the existing infrastructure—which includes just one bathroom each for men and women—Mr. Ray has proposed the allocation of approximately 500 square meters of land adjacent to the check post. He suggested the construction of a pre-fabricated toilet and refreshment block to address the pressing needs of travellers. The project, he noted, could be financed either through the Union Territory’s budget or, if required, through his MPLADS (Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme) funds.
The MP has urged the district administration to urgently confirm the availability of suitable land and complete any necessary formalities, including obtaining forest clearance where applicable, to enable swift approval and execution of the project.
Terming the proposal a “long-pending and repeated demand of the public,” Mr. Ray emphasized the need for prioritizing the initiative to ensure basic comfort and hygiene for all commuters using this key transit point.
